As long as we have families, friends, jobs and interactions, stress will be a part of our lives. Stress, if not appropriately dealt with, may begin to build. Our body may give us signals, telling us our stress levels are too high. Feelings of anxiousness, racing heart, dizziness, sweating, urge to escape, lightheadedness and many other symptoms may be signals of stress. They could also be indicative of another physiological problem and this is why it is BEST to see your physician and rule out any physical cause of symptoms. When it is determined that these feelings are truly anxious in origin, you have a CHOICE.You can slow down and use self-nurturing, by applying Natural Methods such as
(1) Diet/Nutrition, (2) Understanding of the anxiety condition, (3) Coping Skills, (4) Prevention of Symptoms (5) Changes in Self Talk and Self Care, OR you can shift into "what if" type thinking and worry mode, which perpetuates these stressful symptoms. The hormone Cortisol is also released at this time. These hormones cause the body to go into the Fear-Adrenaline-Fear cycle.
Panic Attack or Fight or Flight Response, elicits the following responses:
Increase in Metabolism
Increase in Heart Rate
Increase in Blood Pressure
Increase in Breathing Rate
Increase in Muscle Tension

Pharmacological Approach

There is the pharmacological approach that includes the use of ANTI-DEPRESSANTS such as PROZAC, ZOLOFT and PAXIL, all derivatives of the same formula. This is when it is believed that depression might be the root cause of anxiety, since these are ALL anti-depressant medications. Due to the fact that these medications can cause a stimulated or "hyper" reaction, resulting in ANXIETY and SLEEPLESSNESS, anti-anxiety drugs such as KLONOPIN, XANAX or BUSPAR might be prescribed in conjunction with the SSRI's to counteract the first set of adverse reactions. Therefore, in many cases, the patient is taking a SSRI and a Benzodiazapine (Tranquilizer) to reduce the symptoms caused by the first medication (SSRI)...to take the "edge" off. Many of the Benzodiazapines (tranquilizers) can become addictive as the person becomes dependent on them. It might be difficult to stop taking them as the anxious symptoms may return full force. This can be problematic. This is also true with SSRI's. Withdrawal might be very difficult for many...sometimes worse than the initial feelings of anxiety.

The patient is now in the position of becoming dually dependent due to a multiple-drug dependency situation. This is why it is so important to LEARN AND PRACTICE COPING SKILLS IF YOU CHOOSE TO TAKE MEDICATIONS. Then, you will be prepared if and when you choose to go off medications WITH YOUR PHYSICIANS SUPPORT AND APPROVAL, because you will know how to naturally deal with the anxious symptoms You will have lifetime skills that will never let you down. You will be operating from strength. Medications are basically a BAND-AID and should be considered a TEMPORARY solution.

(Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) -Antidepressants- Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, etc. (Anti-anxiety Medications) Klonopin, Xanax, Valium,There ARE places where these SSRI medications are helpful if administered appropriately. These drugs when properly monitored may be quite helpful in the treatment of true clinical depression- endogenous depression (depression within) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD). Judiciously supervised, as all drugs must be, they are frequently and effectively used in these treatments. Unfortunately they are often over-prescribed to those with simple anxiety problems which may result in anxious feelings, the exact reverse of the original goal. There are simple alternatives to medications in many situations. This is why it is important to make an informed decision concerning your personal approach to the anxiety condition. There are natural choices available to you and they WORK, without dependency problems, withdrawals and adverse reactions. Take your time making your choice. It's your body and your decision. A PERMANENT cure is the GOAL.
