Title: Fear of Getting Sick
Post by: Tigerdenise on April 30, 2013, 11:15:28 AM
I have one major phobia, and it's the fear of getting sick from others, especially vomiting.  I get extreme panic attacks from this.  It also causes my DP/DR to get worse as well. I had a bad case of vomiting as a young child when getting sick from my brother, and this seems where the fear may have originated.

Dear Denise,

I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with this health phobia. This is not uncommon at all and fairly simple to overcome. Your fears and panic reactions are your body's response to the possibility of losing control. Memory certainly does play a part in this reaction. This is where your adult voice comes in, pointing out the truth of the situation which immediately tones down the intensity of the reaction. It takes a little practice but this helps tremendously along with using the steps we present in the program package. Using this approach is more effective than any medication because it turns off the source of the panic response. It places the power in your hands rather than a medication which carries the possibility of side effects and withdrawal symptoms.

Stress does increase feelings of depersonalization/derealization and by learning how to effectively turn down the stress response and replace it with a calmer more relaxed perspective, clarity returns as a fatigued mind refreshes.

Best wishes,
